London Ambulance Service have set up the Shockingly Easy campaign to get 1,000 extra defibrillators in shops, gyms and businesses around the city. They say it is shockingly easy to save a life in the capital, and that businesses have a responsibilities for their customers and employees.

60,000 Cardiac Arrests Outside of Hospitals

60,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests happen every year in the UK. There is around a 28% rate of survival in a public place after cardiac arrest. But when a defibrillator is available, and someone trained is around to use it, the chance of survival can increase to 80%.

Greenwich Leisure Pave the Way

Greenwich Leisure, a charitable leisure company who have installed a defibrillator in all of its 120 leisure centres, they also have 1,500 staff trained to use them. Since 2011, when Greenwich Leisure’s first defibrillator was installed, they have been used on 11 incidents, with 9 patients surviving.

“Every year we have many thousands of visitors to our leisure centres and there is of course a risk that one of the visitors may suffer a cardiac arrest.” Said Michele Howe, Greenwich Leisure’s Quality, Audit and Improvement Manager.

Like the London Ambulance service, Greenwich Leisure know that for a good outcome defibrillators have to be used promptly, Every minute without CPR or Defibrillation reduces their chances of survival by 10%.

Do the Right Thing

Richard Hunt the chairman of the London Ambulance Service, “Don’t leave it too late to do the right thing.”

“Every shop, gym, hotel and office in London should have a defibrillator so they’re ready to save a London life. And they cost very little – it really is just the paper clip budget.”shockinglyeasy-logo 300x275
